OUR STORY
By random chance (insert wink here) in 2006, I took some food to a struggling family at McKinley Elementary. The minute I set foot on the campus, I knew I was meant to be there. I can't explain that in words that alot of people would understand but I knew my family and I were suppose to take up the banner of that school. We could have just kept it at that...our family helping out who we could when we could. But I saw a bigger picture than that. On one end of town, we have great need. On the other end of town, we have great supply. Both ends of town tend to forget about the other. The fact of the matter is, though, we're a community no matter how far apart we may or may not be. I believe it's our responsibility, as community members, to support each other in whatever way is needed. If we don't who will? What started in one school has now spread to eight different area schools and a handful of counseling and family assistance organizations. Make no mistake: the need is real and the need is great.
One of the biggest and most annoying excuses I've heard in a number of different situations goes something like this: "if you do it for one person, you have to do it for everyone". I'm trying to teach my children that there are no excuses. If you see a need, you have no excuse to not try and help. It's called being responsible. It's called being compassionate. It's called being a person of consequence. I'm struggling to teach my own children to be people of consequence in their circles of influence and in their community. I'm struggling to do that myself. That's why I started this. Beacuse "this" is bigger than just my family. "Need" belongs to our community. We're not asking you to help everyone. We're asking you to help one child. If we all help one child...eventually we help everyone.
